NG Church

Keeping watch over the town for more than a century from the Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk, one of the most imposing sandstone buildings in Ficksburg, is a timepiece made by J.Smith & Sons which only loses two minutes a week despite being in place in the church spire for all that time.

Even now the clock chimes every hour on the hour. Ficksburg has a rich sandstone heritage and the town boasts a number of picturesque sandstone buildings on or near the town square, a number of which have been declared national monuments.

One of the most impressive of these is the historic Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk, which was consecrated on 12 April 1907. Shortly after the arrival of Dominee Kestell, who had served as chaplain to General C J de Wet during the Anglo-Boer War, it was decided to build a church as a monument honouring the Boers who had died during the war.

The plans and specifications for the church were drawn up by an architect, Mr W Donaldson, in consultation with Dominee Kestell, whose idea it was to build a Romanesque-style church.

Work commenced forthwith and the building was completed in less than three years, this despite the fact that, in order to reach bedrock for the foundations for the church spire, workers had to dig down almost four metres.

Virtually every member of the congregation was involved in raising funds for the new building. The women, for instance, worked for the organ and lights and the young people collected for the bell and movement for the clock, while the children accepted responsibility for the pulpit.

The weather-cock on the spire was a gift from a member of the congregation. The total costs for building and furnishing the church are minuted as being £17 526-3-3 (R35 052.37) — the property is now insured for more than R5- million!
