Two enterprising Ficksburgers Sandra Netherlands and Ansie Fourie started a small recycling business focused on turning scrap metal, old enamel and old steel ceilings into art and décor articles. This enabled them to generate an income for themselves and for unemployed job seekers who now collect scrap metal and other articles and who assist them in their workshop. The Blikplek Art Yard employs ten men in the junk workshop.

They have a passion to help those who are destitute, to experience a sense of achievement, to develop a positive self-esteem and to earn a living. Some of the unskilled workers they employed have become skilled welders, other unemployed people are commissioned to create unique articles that are sold through the Blikplek and they are starting to train young women in business skills, catering, hospitality and management.

Small entrepreneurs are given monthly opportunities through a Saturday Market to sell their own wares. They also run a restaurant, a coffee shop, a conference/function venue as well as personalised tours in Ficksburg and surrounds.
